RESEARCHERS DEVELOP CYBER OBSERVATORY
The Gemini Observatory, a National Science Foundation-supported
initiative, will link astronomical resources for increased cooperation
and more efficient, powerful explorations of space. The cooperative
effort involves researchers from the United States, Canada, the United
Kingdom, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Researchers are
linking the telescopes on Mauna Kea in Hawaii and Cerro Pachon in Chile
through the high-speed Internet2 network and a Florida International
University Internet portal called AMPATH. The greatest advantage for
astonomers is the ability to participate in observations from any
location, including their home offices.
