FocalPoint f8 (http://www.f8.com), home of the award-winning online
interactive photodocumentary THE RUSSIAN CHRONICLES, is pleased to bring to
the World Wide Web the

THE DEVIL'S CALDRON http://www.f8.com/FP/DC/
photographs and text by André Cypriano.
Online presentation by FocalPoint f/8.
Over 200 pages of photos and text giving you an insider's view of Brazil's
most notorious prison, "Caldeirão do Diabo" - "The Devil's Caldron", and
the criminal organization, the "C.V." or "Comando Vermelho" (Red Command)
that ran it.
Set on the Ilha Grande, a lush tropical paradise off the coast of Brazil,
The Devil's Caldron, up until its closure in 1994, was Brazil's most
infamous prison, housing some of that country's most notorious criminals,
including important political prisoners of Brazil's military regime. The
mixture of the political and other prisoners led to the founding of the
C.V. or "Red Command", a criminal organization that now controls large
parts of Rio de Janiero's slums, including the infamous "Rocinha"
neighborhood, home to over 250,000 of Rio's poor.
André Cypriano's powerful images and first person account of his personal
journey behind the prison bars is a one of a kind, chilling, yet human,
account of the people and conditions that was life behind the walls of The
Devil's Caldron. It is the only extensive photographic record of the
prison and its inmates ever made. And is the first time that the C.V.
openly allowed its members to be photographed.
The presentation at FocalPoint f8 contains nearly 100 photographs, and the
entire booklength narrative of this as yet unpublished work.
The site includes a Gallery of the photos that make up the photographic
body of work which won not only the Fund for Documentary Photography Award,
but also the En Foco Award this year. The Story section includes over 50
additional photos and the complete text of the story, as well as an
additional Story Images section with other photos not included in the
