> New mediums need new kinds of artists. Without juicy creative input, new media is just a bunch of wires, silicon and data crap. With the application of real humanity, everything changes. Media comes to life. Impactful stories get told.
>
> As I ve watched new media attempt to become real media over the last decade or so, there are few people who did an more incredible job of breathing life into technology than a masterful storyteller named Dana Atchley. He was best known for his interactive theatrical performance, "Next Exit", an extremely personal multimedia performance work that inspired me (and many others) to continue to do battle on the bleeding edge. This work, along with his engaging personality, got Dana dubbed the father of the Digital Storytelling movement.

> Among many other good deeds and creative enterprises, Dana went on to found The Center for Digital Storytelling -- http://www.storycenter.org/ -- which held it s own regular Digital Storytelling Festival over which Dana presided. More information about this Festival and Next Exit may be browsed at:

> Certainly Dana will be back with many more exits to come; but he will be missed and unquestionably he lives on in all of the inspiration (and belly laughs) that he provided for so many people. I ask that we remember Dana s kind and generous Spirit, and use his passing as an opportunity to reflect on the heart of what we are doing online and everywhere -- and in each and every moment.

I m sad to report (if you haven t already heard) that Dana passed away December 13, 2000 due to complications of a long illness. Ê

Thanks (sort of) for this sad news. When I moved to SF (you were there in LA meeting me on my way) to birth Creativity Cafe, the first thing I did was hook up with Joe Lambert (Dana's partner). Of all the people I'd been tracking since 1980, he and Dana were among those creating the closest versions of my Creativity Cafe vision. I had the good fortune to experience one of Dana's Shows in the beginning. I will have you know, his performance spoke reams to my spirit in those moments onstage before his electronic fireplace.

I too am a storyteller, photographer, computer Graphics artist, musician, performer and geek. For the last year I have been creating an interactive CD, illustrating my many sides, both public and private...as support for my planned Digital Storytelling Tour and concert (yes, add songwriter to the list) beginning when the time is right, I will perform in much the same colloquial, intimate and interactive fashion as my mentor, Dana Atchley. The Digital Storytelling revolution will soon eclipse movies and television, making electronic cinema the premiere gathing place and edutainment venue for creatives. I Celebrate Dana's life and his "dance on the edge of time." He will receive an honorary wing in Creativity Cafe.

A hui ho!
