Last night members of the Shiloh Bones Band <a href="http://www.stickam.com/editMediaComment.do?method=load&mId=176990227">performed</a> to support Unity Church in their Sock Hop Fundraiser. <embed src="http://player.stickam.com/flashVarMediaPlayer/176990227" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" scale="noscale" allowFullScreen="true" width="400" height="300" allowScriptAccess="always"></embed> Bonnie Newman, Kachina, Ariella, Peter, Ellen and Sandy were handy with sing-a-long songs for dancing pleasure of those present. The video was recorded with a bit too much volume by my Macbook Pro's built-in mic. Here is the backstory: I have known my dear friend for years. She asked me to support her by playing guitar, so she and other friends could perform together, singing at the Unity Church fundraiser. That gave me two reasons to say yes to her request, three actually. To support Bonnie, the Church and our friends with my god given talents of being an instrumentalist and lover of harmony (on interpersonal fronts as well). But afterwards, I walked away from that performance with Bitchy Bonnie ragging on me, rather than appreciating my support. Why? Because she could not control me with her barked orders, hear me singing (bad sound system and mic not working). She ordered me to sing closer to the mic while onstage in front of the audience. I think her problem (causing her bitchiness) was twofold, and had little to do with anything but her lack of proximity to me and the other singers, who should have, (imho) in hindsight, been clustered together rather than spread in a line spread out from one end of the stage to the other. Of course she's been under a great deal of stress causing her two write me a caustic email. Bonnie insisted I move the mic I'd set up, but she is not an audio engineer (and there was no sound guy who could tell us that my chosen mic was not working or working poorly). Compared to myself, Bonnie is rather ignorant of the physics of microphones, mixing consoles, stage monitors, etc.. Yet she ragged on me for her inability to hear me. If you watch and listen you'll see why: <embed src="http://player.stickam.com/flashVarMediaPlayer/176990227" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" scale="noscale" allowFullScreen="true" width="400" height="300" allowScriptAccess="always"></embed> The fact that not having it right up to my mouth would have made a small difference and which would have excluded Ellen's voice and instrument) because the mic was basically not working. I told Bonnie it's fine where it is (thinking the mic was working). I chose not to follow her barked, demanding command to get closer to the Mic (which I did when I needed to) telling her its ok where it is. If you look at the video you will notice a few things: Bonnie is not standing near us all but all the way out to the left. Given there were no stage monitors, the fact that my mic -- I placed to pick up Ellen and my voices along with her Uke was a problem. The mic didn't work. The sound on this recording reveals me clearly, mainly because of using the mic built into the Mac (the gain was set to high causing distortion). Had the mic been working, the volume I was singing at and placement would've been more than adequate. In rehearsal we had agreed that of the 4 mics, one would cover the vocals of myself, Ellen and her ukulele, with two ladies on each of the other 3 mic's. Everyone would've been mic'ed. Then Ellen tells me she has to sit to see my fingers because she is not sure of the chords and Bonnie chimes in with, "Peter" take the mic, don't let Arielle have her own mic!" or something like that. What's that about? However you will notice that my voice is mixed in perfectly in this laptop recording.
