Landing in LA - Trip First Day @ Gary's

 ••••••••••• Wednesday, August 1, 2007 6:23:28 AM Pacific/Honolulu •••••••••••

Still no email! urggg. Spammers were using old cgi scripts I'd left on the server. Who has time for the full time responsibilities of webmastering unless thats all one does?

I called Lunarpages after a barrage of email yielded nothing and first level tech's parroted their scripts. Lets see if my verbal outrage that a day before my voyage, they stop my mail service unannounced, has made a difference?  I was told if I had asked for a supervisor yesterday, my mail service might have been turned on earlier. Sheeesh!

Day before departure.  Its time to call it a day! I was to meet Daniela where I was storing my car. But, Daniela had her purse stolen at baby beach along with her car keys. I went to help out rather than wrap the vehicle on camera. That delayed lots of plans!

I had responded to her call to meet her at baby beach. Her purse was stolen along with her car keys.

I drove up to get the extra set of keys from Bob upcountry but he was heading down already with the set unbeknownst to me. Dani didn't ask him to call me. so I went up for nothing.  It was getting late. Once i learned she'd recovered her keys, I left in haste to go wrap my Toyota at Art and Heather's!

I thought I was doing a time lapse movie of me wrapping the car, but it wasn't working, little did I know. Dani showed up after search for her cellphone also stolen. I took some shots of us, Then she drove us  back to my house.

I am feeling so blessed that she is in my life. We had some very special moments before she went back home up the mountain about 45 minutes away on the other side of Maui.

After Daniela left, I finished packing around midnight, picking up where i left off at 5am, my favorite time to work.  I got it all together and waited for Gabe to pick me up at 9:30, only he got the runs and sent his girlfriend, Deja who drove me to the airport.

The took one lighter but left another one in my belly bag. Go figure. I got thru the security no problem. In fact I had stopped at Panda Express to pick what I would have for dinner, or to tide me over if I didn't get on the first flight.  I put it in the sleeve of my jacket which was not xray'd at the agricultural inspection station. I had my heart set on "my food" rather than expensive airport food.

Todd Swann just sat next to me. What a surprise. He's on the phone with his daughter.  I was told there are a couple of first class seats at the 12:55 and next plane is 2:07pm. I waited with baited being until at the last possible moment, they called my name!  I made it to first class thanks to Devorah who works at United and got me the great fare!

I ask Paul H if he would pick me up at the airport but he kept saying he was expecting some people to come over and he wanted me to take a cab. I told him its not in my budget to spend $20 on a cab when I could take a bus for 75ç to Gary's.

I called gary who was receptive to my coming over and staying a night early. I was told by Paul in an advance call before arriving in LA town, that he didn't want to have to deal with me unless it was with Peter lite.

I didn't get the feeling I was welcomed, or valued by Paul. He made me feel like I'd be an impediment rather than welcoming me for the clarity and organization I might bring to his work and possibly our work.

He is one of the most kindred of spirits I know, yet sadly is not a practitioner of "The Secret," and apparently didn't want to be of service. He wanted to make it easy on himself and just have me arrive by cab. Understandable.

But I know, If I had a friend coming to Maui to possibly be a business partner who had a physical challenge and requested some assistance, I would make it my business to pick he or she up and provide whatever assistance was necessary (as I had with Daniela).

In our conversations Paul basically put me down because I always want money to do what I do for work, although this time, I offered to help him get organized and his Mac's in shape while I visited him for a day.

Since he seemed unwilling to assist me with my things or make a plan to fetch me after his meeting, I decided he wasn't really interested in my assistance or maybe he would lose a parking spot or something else. But the meeting (I would be very surprised if it happened) of unknown significance was certainly more important than picking me up.

These things helped me make up my mind about connecting with him  along with the fact that I had requested we use iChat to coordinate some things... he was resistant and never showed up in the two days before my departure to communicate our intentions about potential collaboration.

He says he wants a team but afaic see, has problems collaborating.... perhaps I do too? At any rate, I don't find the flow leading me to his door.

I got up at Gary's, enjoying the luxury of a futon in my own room. Mike Amron will be driving down us down to SIGGRAPH today.   Oh, well. Plans have changed.  He is no longer in a rush and Sunday is a guaranteed day of departure. All well and good.

I was going to stay with Ed Elkin and Co. for a night or two but that's not working out. Besides Tes is out of town and I'd love to see her too and check out Ed's new accommodations since leaving Maui a year ago. He was one of the reasons I moved there along with Bonnie, who led the way.

I got in late, taking a city bus to Barbacoa's rather than the (expensive) cab to Paul's - as he kept suggesting even though the airport is 10 minutes from his house.

He kept suggesting I just take a cab. I told him I didn't want to spend $20 on a cab when I could take a 75 cent bus to another friends. I was thinking of my dear friend Gary who has "been there" for me for years!

Gary was happy to see me and I him! I thanked him for his gracious last minute lodgings. He was expecting I would stay Friday night, his film screening night. But, my ride to SIGGRAPH changed his mind and put off the trip until Sunday, and with Paul not picking me up, things go screwy.

Gary left for work early before I'd gotten up.  I hung out writing and printing out the press credentials that Les H emailed from the Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation stating I will be photographer for his crew covering Siggraph.

My dear sister Stef called around 10am as we had arranged yesterday. I let her know I was in safely and we planned for me to stay on Friday with her but it didn't work out that way.

Being 5 minutes from Gary's she picked me up. I treated her for breakfast and went back to her house. She is so the poster child for the PEACEFUL KINGDOM with all her kids, cats, birds, beaus, bro's, pretty clothes, her loving glow and our most awesome connection, that only my mother comes close to providing for that "sacred blood family feeling."

I hung out writing at her house while she did errands and David wrote his novel. I was processing files and photos and getting on the net to set up an appointment at the Mac genius bar to see if I could get diagnostics on my broken Mac.

Mike A, my ride to SIGGRAPH and old buddy from there called. We made a plan to get together an met at the Rose on Rose. No sooner did I plug in my cellphone recharger and the laptop, than what do you know! There was Fred Spannjard from Maui!

We chatted for a minute and then he left and Mike showed up. Mike and I caught up. We've known each other for years from computer circles in LA.  He drove me to the Mac Store for some Genius action on my smashed MacBookPro. They couldn't do much but suggest a system reinstall.

Mike was really nice to help try some fixes using Unix on basic Networking issues that seems to have been fucked up.

The Mac Genius wanted me to bring the machine in after backing up for re-installing the system. Once I restarted the Mac, it fixed itself!  You have to love Mac for that!  He dropped me off at Stefani's who was disturbed that I hadn't come back until 6:15 after arranging for her to give me a ride to Garys (which she did) at 5pm. Whooops.  I apologized profusely.

I was a hour early for Gary's Cinema Screening on his new 50" plasma screen.  I walked to Taco Bell for dinner and a place to write this blog post.

The war movie he shared did not compete with my need for sleep and I wound up crashing in a chair and started snoring... which i never do, but I was comfortable on my back, which is rare if not impossible in a bed.

I didn't hear that everyone had left (only 4 in attendance) and it was 1:30 am. I had slept in the chair for 5 hours! He'd forgotten to put out the bedding so I slept covered in pillows in my clothes. I sleep peacefully in comfort.

I moved into the bedroom at 2am and was basically sleeping in all day Sunday until lugging my "small travel kit" back to Stef's. to spend Saturday Night before Mike's drive down to siggraph.

An Act of God and Stupidity Results in Sudden Tragedy

I met with considerable hardship today. Its Friday July 26th 2007...
not even the 13th.

I was at the bank making sure I have sufficient funds for my
impending voyage of two months to go to SIGGRAPH, do business in LA
and NY, visit Dad and relatives in Florida, before visiting my mom
for her 88th birthday in New Jersey.

My Canon Digital Rebel still camera was slung over my shoulder when I
went into the bank to fill out a deposit slip, before going back
outside to use the ATM.

I had set the camera up on the counter above the work/writing area.
"hmmmm," I thought, "I'd better not forget this;" probably
programming the mistake that cost me big time!

I finished making out the deposit slip and went outside, used the ATM
and on the way to Longs, ran into an old friend. She needed a ride
home, my conversation with her further distanced me from not
realizing the camera was no longer hanging off my shoulder.

Sure enough the concepts revealed in the movie "The Secret" were in
operation! That thought "I better not forget it since it will be
above the field of view of where i am making out the deposit slip"
was more than predictive.

I dropped off my friend, got home to my parking spot, then made the
fatal mistake. I put the computer that I carry with me everywhere, a
brand new Mac Book Pro that I purchased to replace the one that
recently had its screen smashed by the wind, on the roof of the car
(in a cloth carrying sack).

I searched the back of the mini wagon I drive thinking, "I must have
taken the camera off the passenger's seat to make room for my friend
and put it in the back." But it wasn't in the boot.

That's when I realized I'd left my precious camera at the bank which
was closing in moments. Anybody could have walked off with it.

I got back in the car and raced off getting halfway before the second

I did a 180 bat-turn and in two minutes I was back at my house. Sure
enough, there was the laptop bag with laptop peaking out in the
middle of the main access road. I scooped it up and did another bat
turn heading for the bank. On the way I prayed that when i opened the
laptop cover, I would have an intact screen. No such luck.

The laptop screen was broken all right as well as some other cosmetic
parts and who know what inside, since i can no longer rest my palms
on it, because that makes the curser jump like crazy. The whole
computer is slightly bowed now... but still working!

You have to realize I work at the computer almost 19 hours a day, day
in and out. I don't do well with gravity for long bursts and have to
lay down frequently -- usually with the laptop dancing between
balancing on my belly or supported on a knee.

I am so addicted to learning on the Net and converting my creative
thoughts and impulses to communicable multimedia ideas, that I suffer
from post postpartum depression without a computer nearby. Can you

When the laptop is not available to move my projects for the Earth
forward (and personal projects like broadcasting my Thursday Night
Jams music session live at

mauimacman), I start to get intense cravings - it must be like what
a pregnant woman feels like.

So, just like my old laptop that in March, had a similar misfortune
(with smashed screen thanks to a whooping wind that sailed it off a
table), I am now faced with two laptops that need screens and a
savage crimp in my work flow.

With that in mind, If you'd like to purchase a 5 month young MBPro
before I get it fixed, let me know. I'll make you a great deal!

This machine with half a screen (that amazingly still works) will
make a great desktop computer if you just invest the $300 more
approx. to purchase an external (LCD TV) monitor!

Now, what I have to do is to decide if I should buy the new MacBook
Pro rather an fix (for $1600 approx.) this one (purchased four months
ago), for just a bit more than Apple's price for the screen repair on
my 3 year old Aluminum PowerBook.

That has become the file server and back up machine in my studio
LAN. I think that machine is going to get the LCD TV/Monitor
treatment since it runs both Mac OS 9 and X. Then I will have enough
machines in which to mock up a Creativity Cafe Digital Storytelling
and mentoring environment!

I am looking forward to the day I can move everything into a
community venue and begin implementing 24/7 the 27 years of planning
on how to best serve the public with our common interest of a social
mechanism by which we can reprogram the masses to more speedily
evolve an inspired and revitalized world filled with happy, healthy,
peace filled and prosperous people.

Please contact me if you are part of this project?

As a reward for getting to the end of this post, here is a link to your free SIGGRAPH Tradeshow Exhibits floor pass!

PS: I guess its better to have half a screen rather than no screen at all as in Laptop #1. What would you suggest I do, repair, sell, or ???? with the broken laptops?
