DEAR PETER:
IT'S THE DAY AFTER MY BIRTHDAY 2007… AFTER MIDNIGHT. I'M ALONE HERE AND PICKED UP MY OL GUITAR. TOOK OUT A BEGINNER'S BOOK AND STARTED TRYING TO LEARN TO PLAY SOME NEW STUFF.
A DISMAL FAILURE.
BUT THEN THE FINGERS STARTED MOVING TO SOME OLD TUNES I KNEW, BECAUSE I WROTE THEM.
AND IT SOUNDED PRETTY GOOD EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. BUT MY VOICE LOST ITS MIDRANGE AND SOUNDED BAD.
SO I FOUND OUR OLD TAPE FROM 1973.
I PUT IT IN THE RECORDER AND…MAGIC.
PETER, IT JUST BLEW MY MIND. HOW I WROTE A SONG THAT DAY, CAME DOWNSTAIRS TO OUR OLD CHARLES STREET BACKYARD AND YOU JUST PICKED IT UP SO WELL.
YOUR GUITAR PLAYING BLEW MY MIND. HOW YOU KNEW WHAT NOTES TO PLAY AND THE SOUND WAS AMAZING. ALL THESE YEARS LATER.
YES, MY VOICE WAS SOMEWHAT THIN AND BREATHY BUT VERY SWEET.
AND YOU COULD HARMONIZE AND DO ALL SORTS OF FALSETTA SOUNDING STUFF. AND YOU ADDED THESE MINOR CHORDS TO MY SONG.
IT WAS SO REMARKABLE AND TRANSPORTED ME BACK THERE TO THAT VERY NIGHT.
I REMEMBER IT BETTER THAN YOU WOULD CAUSE OVER THESE THIRTY SOME ODD YEARS I'D HEARD IT A FEW TIMES….BUT DO YOU RECALL ANYTHING ABOUT IT? PEOPLE WERE PLAYING PING PONG AND IT SOUNDED LIKE A METRONOME IN PERFECT TIMING.
AND NOW I'M LISTENING TO OTHER SILLY JAMMING WE DID. YOUR VOICE IS REALLY AMAZING.
NOW YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU STARTED PLAYING THE GUITAR, PEOPLE SITTING AROUND HAVING A HOOTENANNY PLAYING SCOTCH AND SODA…
YOU SAID THAT'S WHAT MADE YOU GO TO NY AND START PLAYING GUITAR.
NOW I'M LISTENING TO THE TAPE YOU MADE ME WHEN I GOT MARRIED. AND YOU SENT US SINGING "MI AMOUR MI CORAZON".
ANYHOW, JUST WANTED TO SAY HEY, AND YOU REALLY WERE A GREAT GUITARIST AND HOPE YOU STILL ARE …
LOVE ANDEE

Dear Andee,

Wow, what a great gift...to read your words. Remind me, when is your birthday?

Thanks for sharing your feelings about those days. I do happen to remember that day with you in the backyard, in the center at 74-76 Charles by some brick wanna be planter, with your guitar. I remember getting mine and coming back down to back you up! You were so excited that you had written this song of yours! I don't remember much else except listening to it up in your place later that day. :-) happy memories!

I sure would love to have a CD of that tape you found. Its a rare relic. I was just thinking about trying to see if my magnetic archives of 40 years ago have survived? Maybe you can find someone to help you digitize the tape to preserve it and strike me a copy? (hint: get a patch cable from radio shack with a mini stereo plug on both ends. One end goes into the headphone jack of the cassette machine. The other end goes into the MIC In (or LINE IN) on your computer. You would then use some audio recorder you have or could download for free to make the digital copy). Plenty of articles on the Web speak of the process. Its not at all hard. You want to wind up with the file in the "AIFF" audio format. That is what you burn onto a CD.

I never hear anyone complimenting me like that. Thanks for the ego boost! That's one of the downsides of my single life (especially in later years since my serial monogamy days are done and I tend not to go out much on the hunt).

If I were out there performing, I might attract a fan club. That'd be nice. I sure could use some positive strokes to balance my rather tormented existence. (I just decided to take slightly more meds than prescribed which helps). What I was taking was not providing enough pain relief, so now I'm taking the pills 4 times a day, rather then three -- that seems to do the trick!

My need for recognition and connection is what will probably drive me back into performing. In fact I am working with a friend toward that end now - both of us playing guitar and singing. Play the link to a sample of Jim and I. I am sure you will get a flash back to our days, I'm sure when you hear us. BTW, We often broadcast live on STICKAM.COM if you care to tune in (and happen to be up in the middle of the night)? LOL Just look up MauiMacMan once you get to Stickcam.

love,
peter
