UH to promote environmental efficiency

Earth Day symposiums aim to create models for managing resources

Wednesday, April 3, 2002

The University of Hawaii aims to become a model of sustainability for
Hawaii and the world.

And it wants you to help, starting on Earth Day, says Bruce Miller,
coordinator of the UH Sustainability Program.

Sustainability means "managing resources today so they're still
available for future generations," Miller said yesterday at the
Energy House on the Manoa campus.

UH President Evan Dobelle will announce plans for a UH "Charter of
Sustainability" at 9:30 a.m. April 22 at the Energy House. It was
built in 1976 and was a showpiece of climate-appropriate architecture
and energy efficiency ideas of the time.

Technologies have been improved upon since, said Dean Johnston, an
architecture graduate student who is involved with retrofitting the
Energy House for the new millennium with updated solar water-heating
panels, solar photovoltaic cells to generate electricity, water
conservation measures and more.

Miller envisions the refurbished house as the physical center for
students, faculty and community members focused on improving lives
while using fewer resources.

On Earth Day, it'll be the staging ground for Dobelle's call for
citizen participation in the areas of sustainability that were
identified at a Feb. 1 strategic planning event for the Manoa campus
that was attended by 1,400. The areas are: sustainability policy,
energy, human values and campus experience, transportation, building
design, materials use and recycling, water, land use, education and
research, natural areas, and outreach and UH investments.

Faculty and staff at each UH campus will help craft what
sustainability will look like at each particular location, Miller
said. On the Manoa campus alone, Miller said, the university spends
$12 million a year on utilities, a cost he said could be reduced by
up to 40 percent.

The money saved could be used to further other sustainability ideas,
Miller said, such as:

-- How much could be saved on watering costs by using
drought-tolerant plants?
-- Can the university improve the bike-friendliness of the
campus and the streets leading to it?
-- Can it improve worker satisfaction regarding indoor air
quality in its buildings?
-- Can there be systemwide policies for recycling, for
cost-effective purchasing and more?

Some of the sustainability ideas will be "fast-tracked" to show
results quickly, Miller said. "At first we'll try to get the biggest
bang for the buck," he said.

Another Earth Day event at UH will be the "Genuinely Green Earth Day
Awareness Fair" from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hemenway Hall
courtyard. The event is sponsored by the Pacific Action Alliance, a
student environmental and social justice organization.

April 13, gold grid activation

--
Hello, everyone, this is Barbara Wolf.
Global Meditations Network.
http://www.globalmeditations.com

April 13, a complex, five-pointed golden energy grid will be activated
for our earth. 8 p.m. GMT; 9 p.m. BST; 4 p.m. New York time;
3 p.m. U.S. Central time. For your specific time, please check
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

You can help with this activation by creating with your mind
POSITIVE ENERGIES, and by sending these positive energies across the
planet. If you begin now, that is wonderful. If you continue for the
next twenty-four hours or longer, that is wonderful.
Every effort helps.

Today we are nearly overwhelmed by negative energies.
Let us turn the tide. When we are sending out POSITIVE ENERGIES,
let us remember to inject POSITIVE ENERGIES into every area of
negativity on this planet. Our goal is PEACE.

Peace, Love, and Light,
Barbara Wolf

Planting TREES and PLANTS

In Memory of Lt.Nawang Kapadia.

We , the Kapadia family and friends decided last year to spread the message of Peace through various means in Memory of dear

Lt.Nawang , who lost his life fighting the militants in Kashmir.

Planting plants and trees was a natural expression , which I wanted to persue with intensity .

And as we, friends and family planted trees ,

I learnt more about the life of trees. That they had personalities and that the vibrations they spread was , charismatic to their character.

A learned Shastri classified the personification of trees to be planted

for better enviroment

Here is the list of trees and plants to begin planting

These are forest trees but should be grown in cities for the benifits that they hold

Amla (indian gooseberry)

The small but sturdy tree, with soft , delicate leaves , with sour fruits which leaves sweet taste .

It is a symbol of youth and life , and has numerous nutricious and medicinal values .It is easily grown in compounds of school s and on the road side.

Khair tree

The Katha , used in Betal leaf is made from the bark of this tree.

The wood inside the layer of the bark is very strong and is used for the fire of an Yagna .

The wood is considered to have power of burning of hundred trees.

The ember of this wood has a long lasting quality .

The wood of Khair is used for making the plough and the pounding log for rice..Hence this tree signifies endurance and strenght .

Jack fruit -tree .

A thick round leaves of this tree , give a thick warm feeling .

The fruits , cling to the tree trunk and though are huge come in a cluster. The skin is poky and the fruit very juicy and fregrant .

The pulp as well as the seeds are eaten .

The tree , signifies the tough outside and warm inside personality,

it also signifies the togetherness of family and siblings .

The leaves and the wood is used in varity of ways .

Apta Tree

The leaves of this tree are known to be symbolic to Gold and are exchanged on Dassera day.

A child is considered should have a character as pure as Gold.

Sawar (.Indian silk cotton tree)

A elegant tree , symbolizing soft caring nature of silk -cotton ..

Dev babul

A babul tree which grows straight up towards sky , like temple Dome rising .

signifies higher goals in life.

Bamboo

for its longitivity and sturdy , ever useful character.

Sonachampa ,

for its gold enflower and beautifull high rising straight skywords.

And for house plants ,

all those beautiful croaton and bouganvillas have negative vibrations

so go back to grandmotherÔs garden for life sustaining quality.Hibuscus ,Tulsi, Mogra, Anant, Aboli , Sadafuli ,Jai , Juhi .Gokarn,

Well , we have made a beginning towards Peace

in Memory of Dear Nawang ,

why not join in by planting more trees on The Mother Earth.
